Jozef Sušienka (1937)
In the 1960s, Jozef Sušienka shifted Slovak ceramics from functional craft toward autonomous sculpture. By hand-shaping clay, he redefined modern Slovak sculptural practice. His radical approach gained international recognition, culminating in a Gold Medal at Faenza, Italy (1972), placing him among the leading figures of European artistic ceramics.
He systematically created monumental works integrated into architecture. His biomorphic objects were thoughtfully embedded within urban and park landscapes, where they sensitively and functionally enriched the surrounding environment. Today, however, the condition of these outdoor works is critical. Many are being neglected, removed, or lost, as society has yet to fully appreciate the value of this significant modernist heritage.
